My cousin’s birthday was approaching and I wanted to give her a good present. After thinking hard about it, I decided to gift her a cake, specifically made by me. Now, I confess I am not a good cook and making a cake all by myself is not so good proposition.

So, I decided to join a pastry and cake making workshop. I stay in Gurgaon and decided upon Academy of Pastry art, after going through a thorough search on the internet. Academy of Pastry Arts Blogs_LOVE, BAKE AND PRAY

Baking and cooking are said to be great mood boosters. I know a particular person, a woman who suffered from acute migraine. Her husband was clueless about how to deal with the situation and tried every rule in the book, right from  counselling friends and doctors to going to the astrologist for advice. Nothing worked. But, gradually the troubled couple found a solution. Housework and specifically cooking seemed to be the answer. As the woman indulged in cooking and particularly baking, her migraine started to recede and she began to recover.

Baking does have that quality...its a nerve smoother. Infact cakes, have that special something about them. Our forefathers understood the importance of cakes and maybe this is the reason that they were revered upon so much in the earlier times, that no weddings, or birthday parties seemed to be complete without them. So, lets decode this phenomenon, this thing of our affection in our lives.

Cakes have originated  from the viking word ‘kaka’. Cakes in the earlier times was made from the simple procedure of mixing butter, nuts and sweetening products like honey to breads. Breads too were made from a simple process where mixed grains were pounded and the paste formed was heated . Soon, as time passed and men gained more power over heating process, cake making became simpler and cakes became more sophisticated in nature.

Time changes and so cake making and baking them too changed. Now, in the modern era, one doesn’t have to toil in the kitchen and go through recipe books to learn baking. There are many avant garde cake  making and pastry schools like International institute of culinary arts Delhi and Academy of Pastry Arts in Gurgaon where one can learn the tricks of the trade. Here everything is taught by complete hands on training which increases the dexterity of the students in the art of baking.

Academy of Pastry Arts Blogs_Say it with cakes

Cakes perhaps, speak a universal language. And that language is the language of love. May be this is the reason that no celebration is complete without cakes or its equivalent. Cakes are something which have  always stood for something juvenile. Maybe it’s the sugar that is put in it, which has anti-depressant qualities about it or it’s just the cream or maybe the combination of these two which just tastes heaven.

Cakes don’t only taste good, but their looks are just enough to leave everyone flabbergasted. Nowadays, cakes are available in different textures, shapes, structures and flavours and are complete enchanters.

It’s not only now that cakes have ruled people’s mindset or come in vogue in popular culture. Even in the pre-biblical times people had this habit of cutting cakes in social events or every moment of celebration. Cakes in the early times used to be made by mixing honey, butter and nuts to bread.

In the era of the Lord, even Jesus is said to break bread with his pupils while having supper. This shows baking and caking has always been something which has been associated with joyous moments.

In India, the culture of cake cutting was brought by the British. Earlier sweets were mostly used to celebrate big moments of life, but cakes gradually substituted this. Fast forwarding to the modern era, there are top baking and pastry schools which teach baking to novices. So, celebrate those special moments of life with cakes, cupcakes and pastries.

Cakes are something which since the beginning of civilisation has been associated with celebrating everything good in life. The reasons may vary as why is it so? May it be wedding rituals or any auspicious occasion or a simple birthday celebration, no event seems complete without the cake cutting ceremony. Perhaps this has to do with the fact that sugar has the property to lighten depressing moods and a blend of cream and bread to this sugar is well….heaven.

Cakes, in fact have an interesting etymology. It is derived from the viking term ‘kaka’. The first cakes were made in pre-biblical times when butter, honey and nuts were mixed to bread. Soon as the heating system became more evolved, cake making more simpler and cakes became more sophisticated in texture, shapes and structures.

Fastforwarding to the modern times, there are various baking and cooking institute in India which teach the art of cake making to novices. Going the unconventional way

I was an ‘above average’ student. So, when I told my parents about my career choice of becoming a pastry chef after my graduation, as was obvious and quite natural, it came as a shock for them. Like every Indian middle class household, they wanted me to become an engineer or a doctor. And for a student who was quite good in academics, they expected their son to go the same conventional (and may I add monotonous) way as others. After little pursuing, they agreed as per my wishes. So I set on my journey to become a pastry chef. Now, one may ask what motivated me to pursue this career. Well, the reason being, my mother is an amazing baker herself and the cupcakes and pastries made by her are inspiring enough to induce others to become pastry chefs and bakers. It would not be wrong to say baking, perhaps, is in my genes.

So, continuing my story, I started on the hunt by looking at various cooking institutes in India. I also looked out for various baking and cake making institutes and academies. I had thought of pursuing a certificate course in baking and pastry making.

I looked through various bread making classes such as the bread making classes in Mumbai. However, since it was far from my hometown, I decided against it.

Finally, I zeroed in on Academy of Pastry Arts, which has its campuses in Gurgaon as well as Bangalore. The enrollees here can choose from number of bakery and confectionery courses and are taught by chefs of International and National repute. These courses cater to the needs of the middle and upper middle class people.

Academy of Pastry Arts, I learnt also uses, state of the art technology to teach the students the craft of baking and pastry making. It’s a complete hands on training.

I do think ‘The Academy of Pastry Arts ’ is the right institute to train me and help me pursue my unconventional career of becoming a pastry chef. And I advice others also to go for it who want to go the uncommon way !

The art of cooking in India

Cooking according to many people is a new phenomenon in India, but the fact of the matter is that India always had a rich tradition of khansamas. Khansamas were these home bred cooks who specialised in cooking some good food for the royal families. There are various cooking institutes in India, which teach the students everything related to cooking. These institutes give complete hands on training and teach the students by practical training.

There are various cooking degree courses in India which teach the students everything related to baking and cake making. These cake making institutes have the best chefs.
