Cakes were a gift by the colonial power who ruled over India. Before the coming of the British and the Portuguese, birthdays,weddings and most social events were these fully traditional affairs. The people celebrated these social functions by using sweets and kheer or sweet curd. However, coming of cakes completely altered the scenario. The celebrations now underwent a sea change. The sweetmeat was now complemented with a piece of cake or pastry.

Cakes, in the Victorian England, were so revered upon, that no birthdays or weddings seem to be complete without the ceremonial cake cutting. This cake cutting ceremony now, became the part of Indian household and since then this tradition seems to have struck a note with the Indian junta.

Cakes ...so what’s about them? Why are they adored by the kids and equally liked by the adults? And why do they become the part and parcel of each household they enter? Well, to answer all these questions let’s start with the origin.

Cake, comes from the viking word Kaka. Cakes in the initial years, that is in the pre biblical times was made by mingling nuts, butter and honey to bread. With the passage of time, as men controlled heating processes, cakes became more upmarket and sophisticated in nature.

In India, as aforesaid, cakes have become an integral part of all households. In the present times, there are many cooking institute in India where cake making is taught. These institute teach baking at cost effective prices which are just apt for the middle and upper middle class people.
